People living in and associated with the renowned Hotel Shah Jahan Regency experience a spectrum of emotions as they deal with different situations in their daily lives..The movie is based on the well-known novel Chowringhee by popular Bengali author Mani Shankar Mukherjee (Sankar).[3] The 1968 film Chowringhee is an iconic Bengali film, based on the namesake novel, and starring Supriya Devi, Uttam Kumar, Subhendu Chatterjee, Utpal Dutt and Biswajit.Well crafted with a very moving script. The quotes in bengali and English to illuminate a situation, adds a lyrical flavour. Efforts have been made to build the characters which are varied and distinct. Watchers of Korean dramas would see a potential for 16 to 20 episodes because the kaleidoscope of the characters is spectacular. Several of them deserve a more detailed depiction, since they have an endearing quality. Tendency to add sleazy items for commercial interest, has been very well controlled in spite of justified possibilities. That’s creditable. Music is superb. Shah Jahan Regency 2019. I think this is the finest work of Srijit Mukherji till date. I don’t really like the people who don’t get the point of this film. This movie wasn’t about a thrilling tension throughout as in Chotushkone or an eye-popping suspense as in Baishe Shrabon, it was about ironies of our life,about the portrayal of glorious Kolkata culture decaying under westernization.
It’s a film where you keep your brain shut for 2 and half hours and just feel with your heart. In stead of so many heart-breaking scenes in the movie, the most overwhelming one was I think the 1 minute long end sequence of “modern,westernized” Kolkata as you then imagine.
