Jessica Raine is one of those actors who could breathe life into the phone book. She can wheedle and flirt, scowl and crumple, working with all colours of the paint chart. The brick wall is Isaac, the catatonically uncommunicative young son of her character, single mother Lucy Chambers. Brick wall, black hole, blank slate – Isaac, however sparklingly she tries to coax him out, displays no feelings. Is he telepathic? Psychotic? Either way, he can hear conversations with people who aren’t there.No wonder Lucy talks about his problems so openly in front of Isaac with Meera Syal’s child psychologist. She knows he won’t react. Also he can’t say no. When playground bullies tell him to slap his own face, he does so – emotionlessly – until he bleeds. It’s a disconcerting performance from Benjamin Chivers, hinting at chasms of terror under a chill surface.Meanwhile, a serial killer is on the loose.

You’re joking, Brenda from Bristol might reasonably say. Not another one! Well, maybe not. There are two dogged detectives on the case – soft cop Ravi Dhillon and hard cop Nick Holness (likeably played by Nikesh Patel and Alex Ferns). But as the title insinuates, there is more to this witches’ brew of a script by Tom Moran than plain old procedural with drug dealers, paedophiles and social workers.Lucy is prone to psychic flashbacks, things go bump in the night, and time is seemingly out of joint. And what’s Jamie Tartt from Ted Lasso (Phil Dunster) doing in her bed?
